A Girl That Was Looking For Her Brothers

Semper

tickets

Tiger lilies. The purring of a cat. A strange corner in a mysterious room. The smell of a new magazine. These everyday moments can cause the feeling of joy as well as fear in us. Self-consciousness. The wish to be someone else. To scream. To squeal like a little baby. What exactly these moments mean is something we can’t put in words. We simply react when we encounter something familiar.

Man has always been at the centre of Ene-Liis Semper’s art. In her videos, we have seen a person who drives together with a little animal over an empty field to their new home. We’ve seen someone else invite us to an unfamiliar but beautiful place. We’ve seen a flower being planted in someone’s mouth and someone hanging and shooting himself – over and over and over. And somebody licks a room so resplendently clean that you don’t even dare breathe when you’re in it – it’s so beautiful.

These people are always temporary. What we refer to as “life” cannot be measured, isn’t even real. Life is not everything. Life is only a small part of something bigger. Ene-Liis Semper has been the creative director of NO99 Theatre for ten years and is the co-author of many stage productions. This is her first play that she is directing alone. She has an idea. She has actors. She has a rehearsal room.
